Review by Gloria Pimentel
Although the opening of this young adult fiction book has a powerful hold on the dark shadows of
teenage suicide, I feel that, the novel is really about the discovery of true friendship, and
strong relationship ties.
Maureen "Mo" Justice, Jaytee Warner, and Otis Fudge are childhood friends and neighbors.
They live in Deer Lake, Colorado, a small farm town.
Pody Slate, Casswal Martinez and Leonard Byrdsong join them as the story progress, each
under special circumstances, and the group of teenagers is in for an unforgettable summer
Paul Wagner has a knack for creating true to life characters that move along the joys and
perils of life, helping each other through trials and triumphs. I found myself totally immersed in
the story, as if I was among them sharing their growing up experiences.
The one thing I especially like about Paul's novel, is the way his characters deal with
death, loss, illness, disappointment and prejudice. The strong bond of friendship that keeps the
youngsters together, through thick and thin, is admirable.
When I finished reading this book, I immediately put it on my Christmas list.
I also recommended it to my family and friends. It is definitely the kind of book teenagers will
enjoy reading, but adults who haven't forgotten what it was like to be  teenagers, will definitely love it.
